Aamir Khan Faces Fatwa After Marrying Gauri Spratt; Interfaith Wedding Sparks Nationwide Debate

Bollywood actor Aamir Khan has found himself at the centre of a fresh controversy after reports of his marriage to Gauri Spratt led to a fatwa being issued by a Uttar Pradesh-based Islamic cleric. The religious ruling has reignited discussions on interfaith marriages, personal freedom and the interpretation of Islamic law across the country.

According to reports, Maulana Ibrahim Hussain, the Shahi Chief Mufti of the Muslim Personal Darul Ifta, stated that a Muslim man marrying a non-Muslim woman without her accepting Islam is against Sharia. The cleric also questioned Aamir Khan’s third marriage, claiming it does not conform to religious principles. It is important to note that a fatwa is a non-binding religious opinion and does not carry legal authority under Indian law.

The controversy follows Aamir Khan’s reported marriage to Gauri Spratt through a civil registration. The actor has strongly rejected allegations linking the marriage to “love jihad” and clarified that none of his wives—Reena Dutta, Kiran Rao or Gauri Spratt—converted their religion. He reiterated that he has always respected every individual’s faith and that religion has never been a condition in his personal relationships.

The issue has generated intense reactions online. While some people have supported the cleric’s religious interpretation, many others have defended Aamir Khan’s right to choose his life partner, arguing that India’s Constitution guarantees adults the freedom to marry a person of their choice irrespective of religion.

Legal experts have also pointed out that marriages conducted under the Special Marriage Act are fully valid under Indian law, regardless of the religions of the two individuals. The debate has therefore extended beyond Bollywood, touching upon the balance between religious beliefs, constitutional rights and personal liberty.

As the discussion continues, neither Aamir Khan nor Gauri Spratt has announced any further legal action regarding the controversy. However, the incident has once again placed celebrity marriages, interfaith relationships and religious opinions at the centre of national attention, with the topic continuing to trend widely across social media platforms.
