HBO Harry Potter Season 2 Cast Update: Kit Harington Takes Over Lockhart
HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television series has made a major casting change ahead of its second season. Kit Harington, best known for playing Jon Snow in Game of Thrones, has reportedly joined the series as Gilderoy Lockhart.
Harington is taking over the role from Nicholas Hoult, who was previously announced to play the famous Defence Against the Dark Arts professor. Hoult reportedly had to leave the project because of scheduling conflicts with other commitments.
The casting is particularly interesting because Harington already has a connection to the Harry Potter universe. He previously portrayed the voice of Gilderoy Lockhart in a full-cast audio adaptation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. His HBO casting now gives him the opportunity to bring the character to life on screen.
Season 2 Will Adapt Chamber of Secrets
The second season of HBO’s Harry Potter series is expected to focus on Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the second book in J.K. Rowling’s original series.
Gilderoy Lockhart is an important character in the story. He arrives at Hogwarts as the new Defence Against the Dark Arts professor and quickly becomes known for his exaggerated stories about his supposed heroic achievements.

Nicholas Hoult’s Exit
Nicholas Hoult was originally selected to play Lockhart, but his departure created the need for a recasting. Reports indicate that his other professional commitments made it difficult to continue with the HBO production.
The change means that Harington will now inherit a role that requires a very different performance from his famous Jon Snow character. Lockhart is charismatic, theatrical and highly self-confident, giving Harington an opportunity to explore a completely different personality.
New Generation Takes Over Hogwarts
The HBO series is introducing a new generation of actors to the Wizarding World. Dominic McLaughlin plays Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton plays Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout plays Ron Weasley.
The adult cast includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and Nick Frost as Hagrid.
The series is designed to spend significantly more time exploring the original books than the feature-film adaptations were able to do.
Daniel Radcliffe Will Not Return
The new series also marks a major change from the original Harry Potter film franchise. Daniel Radcliffe will not return as Harry Potter.
Radcliffe played the character throughout the eight original films, beginning with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in 2001. More than two decades later, HBO is starting the story again with a completely new cast.
The decision allows the television series to establish its own interpretation of Harry, Ron, Hermione and the other characters instead of continuing the original movie continuity.
