Badshah gets notice over Tateeree song lyrics controversy

Rapper Badshah has landed in fresh controversy after the Haryana State Commission for Women issued him a notice over his latest Haryanvi song Tateeree. The commission has raised concerns over the song’s lyrics, which some groups claim are objectionable and disrespectful toward women.

Why Badshah received the notice

According to reports, the Haryana State Commission for Women took suo motu cognisance of complaints regarding the lyrics and visuals of the song Tateeree. Critics allege that the track contains vulgar and inappropriate references, particularly involving women and young girls.

The commission has asked Badshah to appear before it and explain the intent and meaning behind the lyrics. Officials said they will review whether the song violates norms related to the dignity and representation of women. If the explanation is not satisfactory, further action could be considered.

Song sparks backlash online

Soon after the song went viral on social media, several activists and users criticised the content, saying it promotes objectification and inappropriate messaging. The controversy quickly escalated, prompting the women’s commission to step in and seek clarification from the rapper.

Is Badshah new to controversy?

This is not the first time Badshah has faced criticism.

1. Pagal YouTube views controversy (2019)
The rapper was accused of artificially boosting views for his song Pagal through paid advertisements to break a world record. Badshah later clarified that the views were generated through legitimate marketing campaigns.

2. “Genda Phool” credit dispute (2020)
Badshah faced backlash for not initially crediting Bengali folk artist Ratan Kahar, whose traditional lyrics inspired the song Genda Phool. After criticism, the rapper acknowledged the artist and extended financial support.

3. Lyrics criticism in past songs
Several of his songs have previously been criticised for sexist or explicit lyrics, a common debate around commercial rap music in India.

What happens next

Badshah is expected to respond to the notice and clarify the controversy surrounding Tateeree. The outcome will depend on the explanation provided to the commission and whether the panel finds the lyrics in violation of guidelines regarding women’s dignity.
