Amid Backlash on SS Rajamouli’s Controversial Comment on Lord Hanuman – FIR Filed

During the Varanasi event of his upcoming film Globetrotter, director S.S. Rajamouli made a statement saying he does not believe in God, which immediately sparked controversy.
A technical glitch occurred during the teaser launch, and Rajamouli expressed frustration by referring to Lord Hanuman in a way many considered disrespectful.
He mentioned that his father believed Lord Hanuman would “take care of things” and questioned this during the technical failure, which intensified the backlash.
Rajamouli also spoke about his wife’s devotion to Lord Hanuman and said she treats Hanuman as a “friend,” a remark that further fueled criticism.
The director clarified that although he follows Hindu culture and dharma philosophically, he personally identifies as an atheist.
His statements caused massive outrage online, with many accusing him of hurting religious sentiments.
A complaint (FIR) was filed by an organization named Vanara Sena, claiming that Rajamouli’s remarks insulted Lord Hanuman and offended Hindu beliefs.
Supporters of Rajamouli argue that Hindu philosophy allows scope for atheism and that his comments came from a moment of emotional frustration rather than intentional disrespect.
The controversy has led to renewed debate on freedom of expression, artistic freedom, and respect for religious sensitivities in cinema.
