Varun Dhawan Reveals Funny Childhood Story About Dad David Dhawan Threatening to Leave Him on London Streets
Varun Dhawan, known today as one of Bollywood’s most popular actors, recently opened up about a hilarious incident from his childhood that involved his father, veteran filmmaker David Dhawan. The story goes back to the late 1990s when David Dhawan was riding high on the success of his comedy films. At that time, he was preparing for the London premiere of his big film Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Govinda.
Varun, who was just a young boy then, was part of the trip to London along with his father and family. As a child, he was fascinated by movies, but on that particular day, his excitement wasn’t for his father’s film. Instead, he was desperate to watch Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, the Karan Johar romantic drama that had become a national sensation. Even though Varun had never met Karan Johar back then, the buzz and popularity of the film made him believe it was “cooler” than Bade Miyan Chote Miyan.
The Dhawan family arrived at the premiere in a stretch limousine, which was covered in posters of Bade Miyan Chote Miyan. The posters featured Amitabh Bachchan and Govinda in their trademark comic style, pulling funny expressions — a signature element of David Dhawan’s comedy. As they drove through London, Varun openly declared his wish to watch Kuch Kuch Hota Hai instead of his father’s film.
Hearing this, David Dhawan was not amused. In a mock-angry tone, he turned to his son and said, “Stop it, I will leave you on the streets here.” For a young Varun, this was both shocking and funny. Unfazed, he cheekily replied, “You can’t treat children here like this.” His father, continuing the playful banter, looked at him and said, “He is so badly behaved, why did I get him here?”
This light-hearted moment reflected the bond between father and son — a mix of discipline, humor, and affection. Both films went on to do exceptionally well at the box office, cementing their place in Bollywood history. Bade Miyan Chote Miyan became one of the biggest comedies of its time, and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai turned into a cultural phenomenon.
Years later, there’s an interesting twist to this memory. Varun Dhawan eventually made his Bollywood debut in 2012 with Student of the Year, directed by none other than Karan Johar — the man behind Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. In a way, the film Varun once preferred as a child played a role in shaping his own career path.
This story, told with a smile by Varun, captures more than just a funny family moment — it shows the passion for cinema that existed in him even as a child, his playful relationship with his father, and a sweet irony that life brought full circle many years later.
