Marvel Studios Confirms Doctor Doom First Tony Stark Connection
Marvel Studios has introduced a surprising connection between Doctor Doom and Tony Stark, adding another layer of mystery to Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Downey Jr., who famously played Tony Stark, is returning to the MCU in a completely different role as Victor von Doom, also known as Doctor Doom, in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday.
Doctor Doom Connection to Tony Stark
The connection reportedly comes through the new Avengers: Endgame Encore material.
In the original ending of Avengers: Endgame, audiences heard the familiar sound of a hammer striking metal. The sound was a deliberate callback to the first Iron Man movie, where Tony Stark worked on his early armor.
The new material reportedly expands on that idea by showing Doctor Doom forging his famous metal mask.
The sequence creates a visual parallel between Tony Stark and Victor von Doom. Both characters are shown working with metal while creating the iconic equipment associated with their identities.
Is Doctor Doom an Alternate Tony Stark?
The new connection has naturally sparked speculation about whether Doctor Doom could actually be another version of Tony Stark.
However, Marvel Studios has officially presented Downey Jr.’s new character as Victor von Doom. The studio has not confirmed that Doom is Tony Stark from another universe.
The MCU’s multiverse storyline leaves room for characters from alternate realities, but the new footage itself does not establish that Tony Stark and Victor von Doom are the same person.
Instead, the sequence appears to establish a symbolic connection between the two characters.
Tony Stark and Victor von Doom
Tony Stark and Victor von Doom have several similarities in Marvel Comics. Both are highly intelligent inventors who use advanced technology and armor as part of their identities.
Tony Stark became Iron Man and eventually one of the MCU’s most important heroes. His story ended with his sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame.
Doctor Doom, meanwhile, is being introduced as a major threat in the next Avengers story.
Their similarities make Downey Jr.’s casting especially significant for the upcoming film.

Robert Downey Jr. played Tony Stark from Iron Man in 2008 through Avengers: Endgame in 2019.
After Tony Stark’s death, many fans expected Downey Jr.’s MCU journey to be over. Marvel later surprised audiences by announcing that he would return, but this time as Doctor Doom.

The visual connection between Tony Stark and Doctor Doom could become important once Doom interacts with the Avengers.
