Madras High Court Closes Plea Seeking Reconsideration of ‘Jana Nayagan’ Certification

The Madras High Court has disposed of a plea seeking reconsideration of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) certificate granted to Vijay-starrer ‘Jana Nayagan’ over alleged objectionable content.

The petition was filed by M. Chinnasamy, who claimed that a scene in the film referred to his village Pappapatti in Usilampatti taluk, Madurai. He alleged that the film portrayed the village in connection with caste-related issues and election boycotts.

A division bench comprising Justice C. V. Karthikeyan and Justice R. Sakthivel examined the film’s script. The court noted that the script referred to a fictional village named “Pappampatti”, rather than the actual village “Pappapatti.”

The court also observed that the script did not mention Usilampatti taluk or Madurai district. Based on the material placed before it, the judges considered the village depicted in the movie to be a fictional creation.

The court expressed confidence that the filmmakers did not intend to damage the reputation of the real Pappapatti village or its residents.

Considering the circumstances and the petitioner’s concerns, the court disposed of the plea, meaning the request for reconsideration of the film’s certification did not result in any change to the certification in this dispute.
