Marvel Officially Replacing a Core MCU Character Ahead of Avengers Doomsday
Marvel Studios is heading toward one of the biggest turning points in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Avengers: Doomsday, and the studio has already made a major change to the franchise’s central villain storyline.
The biggest shift is the replacement of Kang the Conqueror with Doctor Doom as the MCU’s primary threat. The fifth Avengers movie was originally announced as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, but Marvel later reworked the project, renamed it Avengers: Doomsday, and brought Robert Downey Jr. back to the MCU as Victor von Doom.
Kang’s Planned MCU Future Changed
Kang was originally expected to become the major villain of the Multiverse Saga. Jonathan Majors played several versions of the character, including He Who Remains and Kang variants, and the character appeared positioned to become the next major threat after Thanos.
However, Marvel eventually moved away from that storyline. Following Majors’ departure from the MCU, the studio changed the direction of the next Avengers movie and shifted its focus toward Doctor Doom.
This means Kang is no longer at the center of the upcoming Avengers storyline in the way Marvel originally planned.
Doctor Doom Becomes the New Big Bad
Robert Downey Jr. return is one of the most surprising developments in Marvel history. Instead of returning as Tony Stark or Iron Man, Downey is playing Doctor Doom, one of Marvel Comics’ most powerful and iconic villains.
The decision creates an especially interesting dynamic because Downey spent more than a decade as one of the defining faces of the MCU through his role as Iron Man.
In Avengers: Doomsday, Doom is expected to bring together the film’s multiple superhero groups as different universes collide.
X-Men and Fantastic Four Join the Avengers
Avengers: Doomsday is expected to be much larger than a traditional Avengers movie. The story brings together heroes from different corners of Marvel’s cinematic history.
The cast includes members of the current MCU, the Fantastic Four and the original Fox-era X-Men. Returning X-Men actors include Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn and Alan Cumming.
The Fantastic Four are also expected to play an important role, with Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach returning as the superhero team.
Marvel Is Preparing for a Major MCU Reset
The changes surrounding Doomsday are part of a much bigger plan for the MCU.
Marvel has indicated that Avengers: Secret Wars will eventually bring the Multiverse Saga to an end and establish a new phase for the franchise. The storyline is expected to have major consequences for the future of the MCU and could reshape how different characters and universes connect.
That makes Doomsday particularly important because it is expected to set up the events leading into Secret Wars.
What About Spider-Man and Other Major Heroes?
The huge cast has also created speculation about which established MCU characters will remain important after the upcoming Avengers films.
Spider-Man remains particularly interesting because Tom Holland’s Peter Parker is continuing his own storyline in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. There has also been speculation about additional Spider-Man appearances connected to the multiverse, although several details remain unconfirmed.
Marvel is also encouraging fans to revisit important MCU projects before Doomsday, highlighting how much previous Marvel history could be connected to the upcoming crossover.
When Will Avengers: Doomsday Release?
Avengers: Doomsday is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 18, 2026. The movie is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, with Robert Downey Jr. taking on the role of Doctor Doom.

The sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, is currently scheduled for December 17, 2027.
