Tom Holland Feared Christopher Nolan Disliked His Acting on The Odyssey Set

Tom Holland Thought Christopher Nolan Hated His Acting? Here What Really Happened During The Odyssey Shoot

Actor Tom Holland has revealed that one of the most nerve-racking moments of his career came on the very first day of filming Christopher Nolan’s epic adventure The Odyssey. The Spider-Man star admitted that he briefly believed Nolan was unhappy with his performance after the Oscar-winning director repeatedly called “cut” during an emotional scene. However, the truth turned out to be far less dramatic.

Speaking during the film’s promotional campaign, Holland recalled that he was filming alongside Jon Bernthal when Nolan kept stopping the take every few minutes. Since it was his first experience working with Nolan and using IMAX film cameras, Holland assumed the director was dissatisfied with his acting. The constant interruptions left him convinced that he was struggling to meet Nolan’s expectations.

The mystery was soon solved by stunt coordinator George Cottle, who explained that the interruptions had nothing to do with Holland’s performance. Instead, they were caused by the technical limitations of the IMAX 70mm cameras being used for the film. Unlike digital cameras, each film magazine can record only about three minutes of footage before it must be replaced, forcing Nolan to stop filming regularly. Once Holland understood the reason, he admitted he felt immediate relief.

Looking back, Holland described the experience as one of the most intimidating days of his acting career. Despite his initial fears, he praised Christopher Nolan’s filmmaking style and said working on The Odyssey was a dream come true. He also revealed that watching the completed film left him amazed by its scale, practical effects and emotional storytelling, calling it one of the most extraordinary cinematic experiences he has ever been part of.

The upcoming adaptation of Homer’s legendary epic stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, while Tom Holland plays his son Telemachus. The ensemble cast also includes Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, and several other Hollywood stars. The film has already generated strong early reactions, with critics praising its breathtaking visuals and ambitious storytelling ahead of its theatrical release.
