Jana Nayagan Release Stuck Vijay Film Faces CBFC Silence Theatre Owners Suffer ₹100 Cr Loss

Thalapathy Vijay Jana Nayagan Release Row CBFC Refuses to Reveal Certification Details; Delay Triggers Massive Loss

Thalapathy Vijay starrer Jana Nayagan has landed in major controversy after its theatrical release was stalled due to an unresolved certification issue with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The board’s refusal to share any details about the certification process has sparked outrage across the Tamil film industry, leading to significant financial losses and legal complications.

CBFC Maintains Silence

According to CBFC officials, details related to Jana Nayagan’s certification cannot be disclosed until a final certificate is officially issued. The board has cited legal confidentiality under the Cinematograph Act, stating that revealing information during an ongoing process is not permitted.

This silence has fueled speculation and frustration among producers, exhibitors, and fans, especially with no clarity on whether the film has been cleared, delayed, or sent for further review.

Court Battle Intensifies

The producers of Jana Nayagan approached the Madras High Court after repeated delays from the CBFC. While an initial direction reportedly favored granting a U/A certificate, the matter soon escalated as the CBFC challenged the order, pushing the case further into legal proceedings.

With appeals and counter-appeals, the release date remains uncertain, and the film continues to remain stuck in regulatory limbo.

Huge Financial Losses for Theatres

The delay has reportedly caused losses of nearly ₹100 crore for theatre owners, especially as Jana Nayagan was expected to be a major festive release. Exhibitors had heavily relied on the film to revive box office momentum, but the sudden halt led to empty screens, cancelled shows, and large-scale ticket refunds.

Trade experts believe the film could have earned ₹150–200 crore in its initial run in Tamil Nadu alone, had it released as planned.

Why the Delay Happened

Insiders suggest that despite an initial recommendation for certification after certain cuts, objections raised by a committee member over sensitive content resulted in the film being sent to a revising committee. This unexpected move significantly slowed down the process and eventually triggered the legal standoff.

Industry Reaction

Several filmmakers and industry figures have criticized the prolonged delay, calling it damaging for cinema business, especially during peak festival seasons. Many believe the lack of transparency in the certification process has worsened the situation.

Current Status

As of now, Jana Nayagan remains unreleased, with no official certification update from the CBFC. The legal battle continues, and the film’s new release date is yet to be announced.
