Chatur is WRONG Aamir Khan finally reacts to Sonam Wangchuk hunger strike, says 3 Idiots wasn’t inspired by him

Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan has finally addressed the long-running connection between his iconic film 3 Idiots and renowned education reformer Sonam Wangchuk. The actor clarified that the character of Chatur Ramalingam, popularly known as “Silencer”, was not based on Sonam Wangchuk, putting an end to years of speculation.

The clarification came amid discussions around Sonam Wangchuk’s hunger strike and his continued efforts for education reforms, environmental protection, and the rights of Ladakh. Many people on social media had again started comparing Wangchuk’s real-life work with the themes shown in 3 Idiots, especially the film’s criticism of traditional education systems.

Aamir Khan, who played the memorable character Rancho (Phunsukh Wangdu) in 3 Idiots, explained that the film’s story was inspired by author Chetan Bhagat’s novel Five Point Someone and the experiences of several individuals, but Rancho was not a direct portrayal of Sonam Wangchuk.

The actor also addressed the popular belief that Chatur’s character was inspired by Wangchuk, calling the assumption incorrect. According to Aamir, Chatur represented a completely different mindset — a student focused on memorization and marks rather than creativity and practical learning.

Sonam Wangchuk, an engineer and education innovator from Ladakh, has often been linked with 3 Idiots because of similarities between his work and the film’s message. His educational initiatives, including the creation of the SECMOL (Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh), have focused on improving learning methods and encouraging creativity among students.

The connection became even stronger after the release of 3 Idiots in 2009, as many viewers noticed similarities between Wangchuk’s educational philosophy and Rancho’s approach in the movie. However, Aamir’s latest statement makes it clear that the film’s characters were fictional creations and not direct copies of real people.
