EXPLAINED: Why did Bombay HC order Salman Khan Panvel neighbour to delete posts over property dispute?
The Bombay High Court recently asked actor Salman Khan’s Panvel neighbour, Ketan Kakkad, to consider removing social media posts and videos related to their long-running property dispute. The court observed that social media platforms should not be used to publish content that could harm someone’s reputation and noted that grievances should be addressed through legal channels rather than online campaigns.
What is the dispute about?
The controversy revolves around properties located near Salman Khan’s farmhouse in Panvel, Maharashtra. Ketan Kakkad alleged that the actor violated environmental regulations and blocked access routes connected to his property. He also claimed that authorities failed to act on his complaints.
Why did Salman Khan go to court?
In 2022, Salman Khan filed a defamation suit against Kakkad over tweets, social media posts, and YouTube interviews discussing the dispute. The actor argued that the allegations were false, defamatory, and intended to damage his reputation. He also claimed some statements were inflammatory and could provoke communal tensions.
What did the High Court say?
During the latest hearing, Justice Sharmila Deshmukh remarked that access to social media does not give anyone the right to make defamatory statements against another person, whether a celebrity or an ordinary citizen. The court suggested that Kakkad remove the disputed posts and videos and emphasized that judicial time should not be spent deciding whether such content should remain online.

The High Court has not delivered a final verdict in the defamation case. The matter has been scheduled for further hearing, while the court has encouraged both sides to resolve the dispute through proper legal processes rather than continuing the battle on social media.
