Maharashtra CM Fadnavis SLAMS Pranit More, Says Stand-Up Should Follow ‘Minimum Parameters of Dignity’
The controversy surrounding stand-up comedian Pranit More has intensified after Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis weighed in on the issue, stressing that comedy should be performed within the boundaries of dignity and social responsibility. His remarks came amid growing debate over the limits of free speech in stand-up comedy and the responsibilities that come with public performances.
Addressing reporters, Fadnavis stated that he is not against stand-up comedy and appreciates the art form as a source of entertainment and social commentary. However, he emphasized that comedians must exercise restraint and ensure that their content does not hurt public sentiments or violate accepted standards of decency. According to the Chief Minister, freedom of expression is a fundamental right, but it should not be used as a shield to justify content that crosses the “minimum parameters of dignity.”
The row began after videos allegedly linked to Pranit More’s comedy performances circulated widely on social media. The clips drew criticism from several groups and individuals who claimed that some jokes were offensive and insensitive. The controversy quickly gained attention online, leading to demands for action against the comedian and those associated with the show.
Following complaints, Maharashtra Cyber Police registered a case and initiated an investigation into the matter. Authorities are examining the content of the videos and determining whether any laws were violated. Officials have stated that the inquiry will be conducted according to legal procedures and that appropriate action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
Fadnavis said that while democracy allows individuals to express their opinions freely, society also expects public figures and performers to act responsibly. He noted that entertainment should not come at the expense of respect for individuals, communities, or cultural values. The Chief Minister added that creative freedom and accountability must coexist in a healthy democracy.
The incident has triggered a broader discussion across social media and the entertainment industry. Some people have supported the government’s stance, arguing that public content creators should be held accountable for remarks that may be considered offensive. Others have expressed concerns about artistic freedom, saying that comedy often pushes boundaries and that legal action could discourage free expression.
Several comedians and industry observers have also joined the debate, highlighting the challenges of balancing creative liberty with public sensitivities. The issue has once again brought attention to the ongoing conversation about what constitutes acceptable humor in an era where performances can instantly reach millions through digital platforms.
